The Smart Cities Innovation Summit Promoted Education And Engagement

June 16, 2016

The Smart Cities Innovation Summit concluded yesterday in Austin, TX. Sharing space with the US Ignite Application Summit and the Global City Teams Challenge, the event offered an excellent look into the current and future strides being made in the various fields of smart tech.

While much of the conference focused on tech demos and startups introducing their newest ventures, there was an oft-repeated focus on effective governance and civic involvement. Without an educated and engaged populace and government, smart city initiatives won’t hold.

“The first thing is not technology, “‎Amr Salem, Cisco’s Global Managing Director for Smart Cities and Internet of Everything, said. ”A city needs to find out its priorities.”

The conversation of engagement also tied in the need for collaboration between municipalities. To this end, US Ignite announced its Smart Gigabit Communities network at the conference. Centered around the leveraging of gigabit Internet to develop and share smart solutions, the network will bring together thirteen cities and two states to work on solving urban problems. The members include:

1. Austin, Texas

2. Burlington, Vt.

3. Chattanooga, Tenn.

4. Cleveland

5. Detroit

6. Flint, Mich.

7. Jackson, Tenn.

8. Kansas City, Kan./Mo.

9. Lafayette, La.

10. Madison, Wis.

12. Phoenix

13. Richardson, Texas

14. Urbana and Champaign, Ill.

15. Utah Ignite

“This program is a pivotal moment for Smart Community application development,” Glenn Ricart, co-founder and CTO of US Ignite, said. “The benefits of each community’s program will be amplified by this network of Smart Gigabit Communities. It’s innovation in a 15-community consortium where each community’s contribution is multiplied by 15! We look forward to working with each team in each community on their exciting projects."
